This is a very clever and intelligent
play by Yasmina Reza which questions the basis of friendships. Does agreement smooth
the way or can they survive with complete honesty and total differences?
The catalyst
for mayhem was a large all white painting that Serge had paid a fortune for. This
modern piece, and Serge’s rationale for its purchase, appals his friend Marc and
both turn for support for their positions to poor hapless Yvan, who prefers to sit
on the fence as he doesn’t like falling out with anyone and just wants everyone to
be happy. And anyway, he has enough problems of his own.
So their entire relationship
is called into question and suddenly the men’s friendship of fourteen years is teetering
on the edge of an enormous abyss.
With the clever minimalist stage set whereby simply
changing the one painting it then denoted each man’s house, Adrian McDougall, Paul
Taylor and Ian Crump for Blackeyed Theatre did the play proud with three very fine
performances in what is a very funny but thought-provoking drama.
This superb production
moves to Pinewood Theatre, Crowthorne October 3 – 5, then on to the Kenton Theatre,
Henley-on-Thames for one night only on 19 October.
